Internet Ear

THE INTERNET EAR IS BEING KEPT ACTIVE AND ONLINE AT C.I.T., AALBORG UNIVERSITY COPENHAGEN. CAST BY OLIVIER GOULET.

PHOTOGRAPH BY LARS HORN

THIS INTERACTIVE INSTALLATION WAS COMMISSIONED FOR BIOTOPIA: ART IN THE WETZONE
16 OCTOBER 2010 - 9 JANUARY, 2011.
THE EXHIBITION WAS ORGANISED BY KUNSTEN - MUSEUM OF MODERN ART, AALBORG WITH MORTEN SONDERGAARD
AND PORT 2010 FESTIVAL OF CONTEMPORARY ART.

SOFT CASTS OF THE EAR ON ARM WITH IMPLANTED MICROPHONES, AND WERE LOCATED IN GALLERY SPACES
IN AALBORG, PARIS AND MOSCOW.

WHEN VISITORS SPOKE TO THE EAR, THE SPEECH RECOGNITION SYSTEM INTERPRETED WHAT WAS SAID
AND THE TEXT TO SPEECH SYSTEM SPOKE THEIR WORDS OUT ALOUD IN ALL OF THE GALLERY SPACES SIMULTANEOUSLY.

THERE WAS SLIPPAGE BETWEEN WHAT WAS SAID BY PEOPLE AND WHAT WAS RECOGNISED BY THE SYSTEM.
THIS WAS AMPLIFIED WHEN THE SYSTEM HEARS ITSELF SPEAK AND FURTHER INTERPRETS THAT SEVERAL TIMES MORE.

A WEBSITE ENABLED PEOPLE ELSEWHERE TO CLICK ON THE EAR AND INPUT TEXT TO BE SPOKEN
AND BE HEARD ELSEWHERE. THE INSTALLATIONS RESULTED IN A CACAPHONY OF
CIRCULATING VOICES, VISUALLY DISPLAYED AND ACOUSTICALLY MODULATED WITH FEEDBACK.
